HISTORY & OVERVIEW
Furman & Furman Architects was originally established by Joseph J. Furman in 1923.
Lawrence H. Furman joined the firm in 1949 and Richard J. Furman, AIA became a
principal in 1986.  Predictably, the project types evolved over the first 70 years.

Now our portfolio contains a fair amount of residential work, but for many years, the
bulk of our projects had been retail and commercial design.
Since the mid ‘90’s we have been preparing design drawings and construction
documents for many urban commercial centers & movie theaters of various sizes.
Some of these projects have been either adaptive reuse of an existing building or
preservation and repositioning of an existing theatre.

Most recently, there has been a trend toward smaller independent film venues.
Accordingly, some of our recent work has consisted of small “art houses”.
While we are well versed in other aspects of retail/commercial design,
we consider this a specialty.
